Ceiling Grid Systems

A suspended ceiling grid is the metal framework that holds the tiles. It hangs from the structural ceiling on wire, and the tiles drop into it from above, so the void stays accessible for cabling, pipework and services.

We stock two 24mm systems, XT24 and DONN. Both take standard 595 x 595mm tiles on a 600 x 600mm layout. Pick the one that matches your existing ceiling, or either one if you are starting from scratch.

XT24 or DONN

Both systems do the same job and take the same tiles. The practical differences are the main tee length and how the cross tees connect.

The longer DONN main tee means fewer joins in a long run, which is quicker on a large open space. The shorter XT24 tee is easier to handle and transport, and suits smaller rooms and awkward access. XT24 is the more affordable of the two and the quality is the same, so unless the run length makes DONN the better fit, it is usually the sensible choice.

What a full ceiling needs

A complete grid is made up of five parts:

  • Main tees run the length of the room at 1200mm centres, hung from the structural ceiling
  • 1200mm cross tees connect the main tees to form the 1200 x 600mm bays
  • 600mm cross tees split those bays into the 600 x 600mm layout
  • Perimeter trim fixes to the wall and carries the cut tiles at the edges
  • Suspension wire and hangers hold the main tees at the right height

Components are sold individually rather than as a fixed kit, so you order what the job actually needs.

Wire, hangers and brackets

The suspension wire, wire hangers, flange hangers and angled L-brackets are not system specific. They carry XT24 branding but suit DONN and XT24 grids alike, and any other 24mm system.

Main tees, cross tees and perimeter trim are a different matter. Those are not interchangeable between brands, so if you are extending or repairing an existing ceiling, identify what is already up there before ordering.

Working out quantities

Our suspended ceiling calculator takes your room size and works out the tiles, main tees, cross tees, trim and hangers you need, then adds the whole list to your basket in the right quantities. We also offer a free design and quotation service if you would rather we priced the job for you.
